CarMax's wholesale auctions primarily sell older, higher-mileage vehicles that do not meet its retail standards.

Important canonical boundary

This metric is not the same as Wholesale Vehicle Sales, which owns the automaker-side task of measuring vehicles sold into dealer, distributor, government, or fleet channels.

Here, the business is a used-auto retailer auctioning vehicles to licensed dealers.

Why it matters

Wholesale unit volume helps explain:

how much acquired inventory exits outside the retail channel;
auction revenue and fees;
wholesale gross profit; and
the relationship between sourcing and retail standards.
