Auto finance past-due account rate measures delinquent accounts relative to the ending auto-loan portfolio held for investment under the issuer's stated methodology.

It is an early credit-performance indicator, not a realized loss rate.

CarMax example

CarMax Auto Finance reported past-due accounts equal to 5.11% of ending auto loans held for investment for fiscal 2026, compared with 4.85% in fiscal 2025.

Delinquency versus loss

Past-due loans can cure, remain delinquent, or ultimately default.

That makes the metric different from Auto Finance Net Credit Loss Rate, which measures realized losses, and Auto Finance Average Recovery Rate, which measures collateral recovery after repossession.

Investor use

A worsening past-due rate can foreshadow higher future charge-offs, but the relationship is not mechanical. Underwriting mix, servicing, borrower behavior, collateral values, and loan seasoning all matter.

CarMax's loan portfolio contains multiple origination vintages, so current delinquency reflects more than the current year's lending strategy.
